Chapter Twelve

The Cinema was fast becoming a hotbed of activity as the men from the R.U.C. arrived. Time was fast running out as Taff glanced at his watch and sweat ran down his face.

Suddenly he said to himself, “The toilets. If I were leaving a bomb, it would be in the toilets so it did not harm too many people.”

Duncan Dooley had been manager of the Classic cinema for five years. Before that, he worked as a stage manager and was never once faced with such fear. As he reached for the drawer of his desk to retrieve the half bottle of whiskey, his thoughts turned to his wife who had spent many evenings on her own. He was unaware she was busy phoning the police for any news. Suddenly the clock on the wall brought him back to reality and as he glanced at it, he realized it was almost10:15 p.m.

Now Duncan was not a religious man but at that moment, he found the need to call out to his maker and it seemed his prayers had been heard as the door was flung open.

Taff entered carrying a package. “I just found this package in the gents and it’s bloody well ticking.”

The bomb squad were called to open the package as Duncan was taken outside. The package revealed it was a clock someone had left in the toilets and someone else saw it and thought it was a bomb. After the clock was checked for detonation, the bomb squad informed Taff who called his C.O. on his radio.

“Yes Sir. It seems it was a present someone had forgotten to take home.”

Duncan returned and wiped sweat from his brow and poured himself and Taff a large Scotch, “Get that down you son. You deserve it, and we won’t be telling your boss.”

As Taff swallowed the scotch and put the empty glass down, he said, “If you don’t mind sir, we will give the Cinema one last sweep.”

Taff and the rest of the guys gave the Cinema another check and advised Duncan to shut down shop for the night and head for home.

On their way out, Taff turned to Cliff and said, “Jesus mate. I needed a change of pants when I picked up that package.”

“You and me both, mate.” Cliff replied.

Duncan Dooley looked at the almost empty bottle of scotch and said to himself, “Shame to leave the last drop.” Then he phoned his wife, “Hello dearest,” he said as he talked with his wife. “False alarm dear. Someone left a clock in the gents, be home soon my love.” he said.

His wife replied, “I think it is time Duncan that you found yourself another job.”

“Best get a taxi home.” he said to himself as he realized it was not only the drink that was making him shaky. It was the thought of a bomb in his beloved Cinema. After he swallowed the last drop of Scotch, he began searching for his reading glasses since he needed them to read the papers when he got home.
